FOREST SCATTERING PLAN

"Forest scattering" is a natural burial where the remains are returned to nature. It is similar to "tree burial," which involves burial at the base of a tree, but is slightly different. While "tree burial" involves digging a hole in the ground and burying the remains in an urn, "forest scattering" involves grinding the remains into a fine powder beforehand and scattering them in the mountains. The remains are not buried underground, but rather scattered over the ground like the "Grandpa Who Made Flowers Bloom." In the wild, grass grows and bare ground is rarely found, so the white remains are not left in one place. The powdered remains gradually return to the soil as they are exposed to wind and rain. Furthermore, while in a typical "tree burial," the remains are exhumed and interred after a certain number of years, in the case of "forest scattering," the remains cannot be manually retrieved, so they rest there forever. Japan has a long tradition of "mountain worship," which views the entire mountain as a sacred object. "Forest scattering," which allows one to become one with nature, is an ancient Japanese method of transportation, and even includes poems about scattering ashes in the Manyoshu. Scattering ashes can cause anxiety for bereaved families, as the deceased's remains disappear, leaving them with nothing to pray to. However, with "forest scattering," one can imagine the deceased as having become one with the mountain and become a god. If one feels lonely, one can pray to the mountain or enter the mountains to reconnect with their feelings. While the mountain where the ashes are scattered is not considered a "grave" under Japanese law, it can be thought of as a "grave" as we know it. Thinking of it as a larger-scale "grave" may alleviate anxiety. This is where the scattering differs from "ocean scattering," where the ashes are carried away by ocean currents. While "forest scattering" has attracted much attention, every piece of land in Japan is owned by a landowner, and scattering ashes on someone else's land is prohibited. Furthermore, scattering ashes on land owned by the national or local government, or within public facilities, is prohibited. Even if you contact the local government to obtain permission, permission is usually not granted. This does not apply to the "forest scattering land" that we provide, as all of it is owned by our company or group companies. All "forest scattering" proposed by [Scattering Mountain] is a "natural burial with perpetual memorial service," and there are no additional costs such as management fees in addition to the scattering fee. We propose funeral methods that do not burden the bereaved family, regardless of religion or sect.

Daytime forest scattering

The SANKOTSUYAMA forest scattering plan is conducted during the daytime. You can become one with nature in the dappled sunlight of the forest. Because it is a natural mountain, there are many obstacles underfoot that pose a risk of injury, so scattering ceremonies are not held at night. Our Scattering Mountain forest scattering plans include the FOREST SCATTERING CELEMONY ATTEND PLAN, where a funeral ceremony is held on-site with the bereaved family present; the INDIVISUAL FOREST SCATTERING AGENCY PLAN, where you can outsource the ceremony without being present and review the scattering process via photos at a later date; and the more affordable COLLECTIVE FOREST SCATTERING AGENCY PLAN, where the funeral is held together with other remains. For these plans, we first collect the remains and then pulverize them into powder. The scattering ceremony then takes place. If you would like to keep some of the ashes and not scatter them all, please select the [INDIVISUAL FOREST SCATTERING AGENCY PLAN] or the [FOREST SCATTERING CELEMONY ATTEND PLAN]. For natural burial plans that include scattering in a forest, the content of the scattering ceremony on the day will vary slightly depending on the plan. For the [COLLECTIVE FOREST SCATTERING AGENCY PLAN], you cannot choose the scattering location. Please note that the scattering location will be one of the locations shown below before applying. If you have a specific scattering location in mind, please select the [INDIVISUAL FOREST SCATTERING AGENCY PLAN] or the [FOREST SCATTERING CELEMONY ATTEND PLAN].

A natural, classical, and authentic way of mourning

Scattering ashes in the forest is the most natural way to mourn, becoming part of the earth. Modern graves, which became commonplace after the Edo period, have long been a popular destination for daring, and there's no denying that they can have a slightly intimidating atmosphere. Natural forests offer no such eerie feeling. Forests, which show different faces with each season, are sometimes serene and sometimes mystical. Birds chirp, butterflies flutter. New buds appear in spring, vibrant leaves spread toward the sun in summer, and dead leaves flutter away in autumn. They truly evoke our human lives. Humans, too, are a product of nature. Modern people, often surrounded by man-made objects, suddenly come to their senses and recall the precious things they've forgotten. Perhaps forests are such a place. If souls exist, they're surely spending their time relaxing, swaying in a hammock. Am I the only one who feels this way? In today's world where there is a wide variety of funeral styles, "scattering ashes in the forest" is a natural and relaxed way of mourning without any pretense. I feel that it is a very simple and natural way of mourning.

Recommended points for forest scattering

The best thing about forest scattering is that it "returns to the earth." Forest scattering is an ancient Japanese funeral method, but unlike ocean scattering, it literally returns to the earth. Unlike modern graves, where the remains are confined to an urn, they return to the earth and become part of the earth. With the "FOREST SCATTERING CELEMONY ATTEND PLAN" proposed by SANKOTSUYAMA, the bereaved family members will be present at the site during the scattering ceremony, allowing them to visit the site at any time afterward. While there are differing opinions about the loss of the grave site due to the "grave closure," the "FOREST SCATTERING CELEMONY ATTEND PLAN" allows you to treat the scattering site as a grave and visit the site. The experience of being in the forest of a large ancient tomb allows for a refreshing breeze to blow through, making death feel closer rather than farther away.
