In Buddhism, a "kaimyo" (posthumous Buddhist name) is a name given to a deceased person after death. The name written on most memorial tablets is a kaimyo. In some cases, a person's secular name is written on the memorial tablet. It seems that giving a kaimyo to the deceased was originally intended to ensure that they would be able to reach the Pure Land without getting lost. The reason for renaming the deceased after death is that after death, they will enter a new world as a Buddhist monk and begin their training as a disciple. It also signifies leaving their "secular name" and severing ties with the secular world. A kaimyo is a new name that serves as proof that the deceased has officially entered the Buddhist priesthood. The average price for a kaimyo ranges from 200,000 to over 1,000,000 yen. There are ranks of kaimyo, and the price varies accordingly. The kaimyo "XX-in" (posthumous name) is the most expensive, but this "ingo" (temple name) signifies that the deceased became the founder of the temple "XX-in" through skipping grades. This explains the high price. Kaimyo are often given to people of high status or status, or those who have made great achievements.

A kaimyo is required for Buddhist funerals. It is generally thought that a funeral cannot be held without a posthumous Buddhist name. If you are non-religious, it is common to hold a funeral using your secular name, or "secular name." Also, Shinto funerals and Christian funerals do not require posthumous Buddhist names in the first place.
